INTRODUCING THE FACES OF MOVE IT 2024

MELODY McAvoy

We spoke to Melody to get to know her better and find out more about her dance career so far! You can also check out our MOVE IT socials to see even more from our Faces of MOVE IT 2024!

What style of dance do you specialise in?

The style of dance I specialise in would definitely be commercial and breaking! I’ve worked professionally as a commercial dancer and I’m currently a member of Team GB Breaking.

How did you get into dancing/ where did you train?

I got into dance through my parents, they were both professional dancers and are now choreographers! I’ve been surrounded by dance since I was born! I train at a place called I GOT SOUL! This is my parents Performing Arts school. I’ve trained in many styles from Ballet, Tap, Lyrical, Contemporary, Commercial, and Breaking! I have also had extensive training in Los Angeles and New York. I’ve been Breaking since I was 11 years old with my current coach Reckless Lee.

Who inspires you in the dance industry?

I’ve always been inspired by my parents as they’ve worked with some of the biggest artists, and have danced /choreographed on many tours and tv shows as well as running their Performing Arts school at the same time! I Got Soul Performing Arts is 30 years strong – they inspire me to be as creative and as successful as they are.

Describe yourself in three words.

Passionate, determined, and disciplined.

What are you most looking forward to in the next five years?

Within the next 5 years, I’m looking forward to learning more about myself, improving and enhancing my choreographic skills, seeing where my career takes me and most importantly getting myself to the Olympics winning a gold medal, and representing my country as a bgirl/breaker!

If you could travel back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?

If I was going to go back in time to give my younger self advice I would say follow your dreams, stay in your lane, everything happens for a reason, and trust the process because everything will come to you when it’s ready.

What are you most excited about at MOVE IT 2024?

The thing I’m most excited about MOVE IT 2024 is seeing everyone come together as a community to create a supportive and inspiring atmosphere! I’m looking forward to seeing my MOVE IT faces team do their thing! And most importantly getting to perform with my I GOT SOUL family!

What’s your favourite snack?

My favourite snack is definitely a protein bar haha wherever I am and I need a little boost. I will always get either the salted caramel granade bar or the new Oreo one which is lush.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome?

The biggest challenge I have overcome is my stage 4 ligament damage ankle injury. I was out for 6 months of the year 2021. It was both mentally and physically challenging but I did my physio, I did my rehab and I pushed through because that year was my first year becoming one of the top 8 bgirls in the UK. 2 months after that I was top 3 in the UK and now I’m representing my country as a member of team GB all around the world. On top of that, I have choreographed and produced 2 showcases, been in one of the biggest upcoming films ‘Wicked the movie’, choreographed The Wanted, worked with Warner Bros in Abu Dhabi on a high end production and much more. This shows you if you put your mind to something and work hard for it .. you will always achieve it.

Where’s your ideal holiday destination?

My ideal holiday destination is either Miami or Los Angeles California. Both are my favourite places in the world. Have the best memories:)
