MEET 2024 HEADLINER KID KARAM...

Karam Singh, star of the Sky cinema feature film ‘Breaking Point’, is the first ever official Team GB Breaker and is fast establishing himself as a leading contender for the Paris 2024 Olympic games. Karam’s journey in breaking began in 2006 at the tender age of 8, after being captivated by it in a music video. Inspired to pursue this art form, he wasted no time and quickly joined his first crew, ‘Trinity Warriors.’

Fuelled by his unwavering ambition, Karam’s skills progressed rapidly, and by 2008, he was already competing in renowned events such as the ‘UK B-Boy Championships,’ becoming the youngest participant at the time.

Over the years, Karam has garnered international recognition, triumphing in numerous competitions across the globe. Since the age of 11, he has been traversing borders to compete against rivals of all ages in major events. In 2017, Karam’s career took flight, coinciding with his successful completion of a degree in sports coaching and development. This educational pursuit not only expanded his knowledge of his own body but also allowed him to incorporate external factors into his performances, contributing to some of his most significant accomplishments to date. In 2019, Karam clinched the title of UK B-Boy Championships World Finals solo champion, followed by his victory as the Red Bull BC One UK Cypher
champion in 2020. That same year, he made history as only the third representative from the UK to compete in the prestigious Red Bull BC One World
Finals, which has been held for over two decades.
Karam’s work ethic and positive attitude extend beyond his athletic pursuits.

He is also a professional model and dancer, showcasing his talent and charisma in various projects. With an active presence on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, he has amassed a substantial following of over 230k dedicated fans.
Adding to his list of remarkable achievements, Karam holds the distinction of being the first male breaker to be signed as a Nike athlete, solidifying his position as a trailblazer in the breaking community. Currently, Karam holds the silver medal from the WDSF European Breaking Championships, which guarantees his automatic qualification for the European
Games set to take place in Krakow in 2023. This achievement further cements his status as one of the frontrunners for the Paris Games. Karam’s remarkable journey as a breaking champion and his ever-expanding repertoire of accomplishments position him as a force to be reckoned with. GET TO KNOW KID karam...

What are you most looking forward to as a Headliner of MOVE IT 2024?

I’m most looking forward to the energy & the fun that MOVE IT brings. I remember performing on one of the smaller stages when I was a lot younger, and it was a real highlight! There was a lot going on and it was like a magic space for me as a young dancer! It’s a special year for breaking and I’m looking forward to shining at events like this!

What is the most important lesson you have learnt in your career so far?

The most important lesson I’ve learnt in my career so far is that you have to have purpose & goals. Without them, you just drift around and almost waste your own time! Stay hungry, enjoy it and stay in touch with yourself always. 6 months of hard training with purpose can put you 3 years ahead this is really true

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? / Further career goals in the dance Industry?

In 5 years I see myself as an Olympic medallist. I want to be someone who makes a massive impact on the debut of breaking in the games. I also see myself winning some of the biggest cultural breaking events that I’ve not yet conquered (Red Bull, Freestyle session, Outbreak). My goals are to achieve these things and then be a fundamental part of coaching and elevating the next generation. Also to innovate products and initiatives with brand partners. I want to pave the way for what we do and cement it for the long term.

Do you have any advice for young aspiring dancers who want to get into the professional dance world?

Be brave and be bold! Don’t have any fears because fear is actually just a choice. Anyone and everyone can dance, all we need is music .. it’s so simple if you enjoy it! Believe in everything you do with your movement and work hard!! Always aim for the top because you don’t know where you can end up! There are so many avenues right now for dance so give it your best shot!

What does dancing mean to you?

Dance to me is everything! It’s a lifestyle, expression and it provides consistent meaning. Without dance I wouldn’t be me. No matter how hard it can be, it’s a part of me and I’m thankful for that!

Are there any influences on your style of dance?

My influences on my dance style come from my surroundings. When I started breaking we were all just young boisterous kids. Wild and raw that’s where my character comes from. From the very start I always wanted to be the best, I wanted to be better than everyone else. Whether that was my friends at practice in the park or at actual classes. I’m quite the performer, I like to entertain and take in the energy in the room (outside factors). I almost show off and I think that’s just because I want to show that I’m great. My influence also comes from my city, everything here in Derby is small, it gives you almost underdog energy. It almost makes you want to explode and be bigger than it, and I definitely break in that waysmall precise explosive moments that make impact!

What do you think is the biggest challenge that you face as a dancer?

The biggest challenge you face as a dancer is being accepted and understood. Not everybody gets it and you almost have to hide who you are from people who think it’s a joke. It’s only when you start making noise that people get it. So that’s the initial challenge. The second challenge is having guidance. We are in a time now where there aren’t as many crews or schools with older people who can mentor you. At some point you get to an age where you have to take initiative and do it yourself..  (travel, train etc) in breaking this is so important. It’s all about what events to go to, and what’s beneficial for you, and without guidance this can be really tough. The final huge challenge is staying consistently confident and ready! In breaking it’s very competition and results based! It can be really hard to always stay 100% physically, emotionally, and mentally so you gotta remember why you started and that’s usually because you enjoy it!

What do you think are the most important qualities for success in the dance industry?

The most important qualities for success in the dance industry is professionalism & and openness. Be professional always and leave a positive impact on anyone you come into contact with. This is the most valuable currency. Be open to all experiences, work, and opportunities. It’s ok to stick to what YOU want but you’ve got to get to a point where you can pick and choose. We’re creatives and artists and there’s so much we can do with anything so be open!

What can we expect from your Main Stage Performance?

From my main stage performance, you can expect some fireworks! It’ll be a short and snappy performance that leaves you thinking just wow! I look to have fun and bounce off the energy so let’s have a great time

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself

An interesting fact about me is that I really love football! Football is my first love. I’m a massive Man Utd fan and play regularly. It took me a long while to realise that I was a better dancer than I was footballer so for a long time I’d be back and forth between the two!
