July’s edition of MOVE IT show partner, Dancing Times, is out now.

This month’s cover features our exceptionally talented friend, Brandon Lawrence of Birmingham Royal Ballet.

In June Brandon, launched an online choreography challenge to stimulate bbodance students’ creativity and to support their mental wellbeing during lockdown. It’s no secret that the dance community has suffered the impacts of COVID-19, with dance schools across the world shut, and exams and auditions being postponed. Many dance teachers have gone digital with their classes in order to keep their dancers moving, training and socialising; however many students have still felt isolated and have been missing their fellow dancers and friends.

Lawrence says: “I felt it was extremely important to connect the bbodance family during this challenging time, especially since Dance Days was postponed. Everyone was looking forward to it. Many professional dancers and companies have been creating dance online; I wanted to make it extra special for bbodance members to be part of their very own piece of original dance. I urge you to let your creativity run wild!”

Brandon, who trained at Bbodance has been especially committed to the organisation since becoming its youngest patron two years ago. Since then, he has taught students, inspired graduates and gained the esteem of long-standing bbodance supporters.

Brandon LawrenceThe Online Choreographic Challenge has been open to students of bbodance teachers from across the world with all genres, ages and abilities welcome. Brandon asked students to express what lockdown meant to them by choreographing one of three pieces of music commissioned from the composer, Andrew Kristy especially for the challenge.

All entrants will also be included in a full-length dance film created by Brandon which will illustrate students’ collective experience during lockdown. There will be a winner for each of the three pieces of music. Prizes include a partnership with Dansez, a sustainable dancewear brand that helps fight marine pollution. The twenty finalists have now been announced and the final winners will be announced on Tuesday 14th July.
