Martin Harvey - Bio

Martin plays Johnny Castle in hit West End show Dirty Dancing, The Classic Story On Stage.

Training: Martin trained at the Tanwood School of Dance and Drama until 1989 when he joined the Royal Ballet School. He graduated into the Royal Ballet company in 1997, was promoted to First Soloist in 2004 and left to play Dirty Dancing’s Johnny Castle in September 2008.

Theatre/Dance: He appeared as Oliver Twist in a UK tour of Oliver! and also as Michael in Peter Pan at London’s Aldwych Theatre. Between 1997 and 2008 Martin appeared with the Royal Ballet at London’s Royal Opera House and all over the world dancing many principal roles. They include Crown Prince Rudolf in Mayerling, Onegin in Onegin, Colas in La Fille Mal Gardee, Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Lescaut in Manon, Eros in Sylvia, Hilarion in Giselle, The Brother in My Brother, My Sisters, Faun in L’apres midi d’un Faune and Drum Major in Different Drummer.

He appeared as a guest artist with Birmingham Royal Ballet, Morphoses, Irek Mukhamedov and company, Carlos Acosta and friends and worked with many of the dance world’s leading choreographers including Christopher Wheeldon, David Bintley, Alistair Marriott and Wayne McGregor. He was also filmed for TV and DVD in Royal Ballet productions of Peter and the Wolf, Sylvia, Giselle and was nominated for three Critics’ Circle Dance Awards.

Television & Film: He appeared as Dominic Barber in the Central TV pilot Zero Option in 1987 and then the same role in the follow up series for Central Films titled Saracen (episodes Reapers, Starcross, Ratline) in 1989. Between those in 1988, he was cast as Young Pip in Great Expectations film series for Primetime/Disney/HTV alongside Sir Anthony Hopkins and Jean Simmons.

Martin won the Critics’ Circle Spotlight Award for Best Musical Dancer, January 2009.
