From lighting design to production management, this is your chance to learn more about the exciting opportunities open to you in technical theatre. This session will be led by Rob Young, Stage Management & Technical Theatre Course Director at LAMDA. Rob’s experience spans 20 years and has taken him to well over 100 UK venues and 30 international venues across 17 countries worldwide. He was the first company and production manager for Max Stafford-Clark’s company, Out of Joint, where he managed nine new productions over the first five years of the company’s life – including The Libertine, The Steward of Christendom, Shopping and F**king and Blue Heart. Other theatre credits include: Jerry Springer: The Opera, Yukio Ninagawa’s production of Hamlet and Thelma Holt and Theatre Royal Plymouth’s production of The Tempest. From Broadway to Hollywood, James has done it all and offers advice for up-and-coming performers looking to work in the states. James trained at London University/Central School of Speech and Drama has played many leading roles in London’s West End theatre including The Rocky Horror Show and Pride and Prejudice, and also on TV in numberous programmes including BBC's Dr. Who. On Broadway he starred as Sir Robert Chiltern in An Ideal Husband and branched out into American TV, with credits including; Alias, Murder She Wrote and Babylon 5. Sunday 11th March 11.30 - 12.15 Type: PRACTICAL Exploring Links Between the spoken and sung voice. Musical theatre performers must be accomplished at speaking and singing. This practical workshop introduces techniques designed to guide the musical actor smoothly from one vocal form to the other. These include making physiological adjustments to shift from speech into song or vice versa, matching technical and interpretative ability and looking at how some of the distinctive features of each can in fact inform and enhance the other. For example, the extended pitch range required for singing can be taken into speech to enable the speaker to access a broader expressive range. Deborah Garvey teaches singing at LSMT. The seminar offers a relaxed and supportive environment in which to get some honest answers.
